INTRODUCTION
«England and America are two countries separated by the same language»
George Bernard Shaw
The current paper is concerned with the study of semantic peculiarities of phrasal verbs in British and American variants of English.
The object of the study is identical phrasal verbs with different meanings in American English as compared to their British counterparts.
The choice of the topic is accounted for by the attention paid nowadays to the phenomenon of phrasal verbs in general as a specific layer in the vocabulary of the English language and in its national variants: British, American, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, South African and some other.
Prior research of phrasal verbs includes a lot of scholars working in the sphere of cognitive, communicative and historical linguistics, who have been focusing their attention on the problem of phrasal verbs for over seventy years now [D.Bolinger, L.Talmy, S. Lindner, B. Hampe, G. Fauconnier, M. Turner,E.S. Kubriakova, E.E. Golubkova, I.V. Nogina, Y.V. Petrovich, B.M. Dukhon, L.A. Karasik, V.Z. Demiankov, V.I. Zabotkina, I.A.Sizova, N.V.Avdevich, and others].
Phrasal verbs make up an intriguing element of linguistic research due to a whole range of factors, such as a high frequency of occurrence in different registers of the language, their developed polysemy and the way they encode specific conceptualization of spatial relations.
Some phrasal verbs are shared by British and American speakers and belong to the common English word-stock; others are either specifically British or American. However, phrasal verbs marked in dictionaries as “especially BrE” are widely used by Americans. Thus, there is no unanimity of views as far as dialectal specificities of phrasal verbs are concerned.
Hence, the aim of the given paper is to verify dictionary data identifying phrasal verbs with the same form, but different meanings in British and American English and to analyze their semantic and stylistic peculiarities.
To achieve the main aim of the research, the following tasks will be pursued:
- To examine the existing English British and American dictionaries so as to determine the nomenclature of the phrasal verbs in each variant of the English language.
- To make a list of polysemantic phrasal verbs that differ in meaning in BrE and AmE.
- To give an overview of examples from corpora - COCA and the BNС as an experimental basis for research.
- To interpret the semantics of the phrasal verbs under analysis, in order to identify their motivation.
- To try to account for the existing differences in the stock of British and American phrasal verbs.
Phrasal verbs of different origin have not yet been closely examined. Facts have shown that the information provided by grammar books and dictionaries may not be accurate. The present research could make necessary contributions to the study of phrasal verbs, cognitive linguistics in terms of illustrating different means of conceptualization of an action within one language and to the study of dialectal differences which might be lexicographically relevant, as well.
