The given article rises the data protection problems caused by using technologies. Amanda Ruggeri, the author, shares her own experience of finding out the fact of being tracked by the apps and websites she was constantly using such as Instagram, Google, and Netflix. She decided to explore more about this issue and consulted with experts from HestiaLabs, a start-up company that deals with the influence of firms that use data in their own monetary purposes. By the consultation she found out how her apps contacted third parties to sell her data to advertisement organizations without her agreement. Moreover, it was discovered that users were categorized, mostly stereotypically, by their political views, state of health, and psychological portrait. That was said to affect to peoples’ job opportunities and getting a loan. Another problem that comes with tracking data is more menacing causing even a death. Different apps might harm users by leaking their private information regarding their health, orientation, and location. Therefore, the journalist shows by example how to diminish or try to prevent the data tracking by deleting unused apps, turning off phones, refusal of health-tracking apps or websites. In the end, the author hopes to make this problem more social and suggest people to request companies to get data of themselves.
