Improving occupational safety, clean air and water - all that characterizes the quality of life, can be achieved by slowing the growth of labor productivity.  But at the same time, increasing labor productivity can lead to increased spending on goals that are extremely important to society (eg, environmental protection). Labor productivity does not reflect the general welfare of society, but only output per person-hour.

 There are a number of other factors that are difficult to quantify but that have a significant impact on the pace of economic development. For example, there is no doubt that the United States' large reserves of various natural resources have significantly affected its economic development.  The United States has a large number of fertile lands, there are moderately favorable climatic and weather conditions, quite sufficient reserves of basic mineral and energy resources.  Everyone knows that the United States, with some exceptions, may be the richest country in the world in terms of its reserves and diversity.

 Although the abundance of natural resources is a significant positive factor in economic development, this does not mean that countries with insufficient reserves are doomed to low rates of economic development.  Despite the fact that Japan's natural resources are limited, the pace of economic development of this country in the postwar period was significant.  On the other hand, some of the most economically backward countries in Africa and South America have significant reserves of natural resources.

 Підвищення безпеки праці, чистого повітря та води — всього того, чим характеризується якість життя, можна досягти за рахунок уповільнення темпів зростання продуктивності праці. Але разом із цим, зростання продуктивності праці може потягнути за собою підвищення витрат на цілі, що є надзвичайно важливими для суспільства (наприклад, охорона навколишнього середовища) Продуктивність праці відображає не загальний добробут суспільства, а лише виробіток на одну людино-годину.
