The UN Security Council discussed the situation in Guinea

The UN Security Council held a meeting on the situation in Guinea. The Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Guinea, Joseph Mutaboba, presented a report on the events in this country. He drew attention to the well-organized presidential elections, which "became an important step towards achieving political stability and security."

Joseph Mutaboba announced the agreement of the authorities of this country to conduct a proper investigation into the circumstances of the political murders.

Recall that a difficult situation has developed in Guinea. In early March, President João Bernardo Vieira and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Tagme na Vaye were killed in the country. On June 5, 2009, on the eve of the official announcement of the start of the election campaign, former Minister of Territorial Administration Basiru Dabo and former Defense Minister Helder Proens were killed.

But, nevertheless, the presidential elections were held peacefully and without any serious incidents. In July, Malam Bakay Sanya, a candidate from the ruling African Independence Party of Guinea, won the second round of presidential elections against former President Mohamed Yalla.

The report calls on political leaders to develop a dialogue with voters in order to strengthen democracy in Guinea and regain the trust of citizens and restore their faith in the democratic process.

The UN chief called on the country's leaders to ensure respect for the rule of law and the realization of the people's aspirations for peace, security, and socio-economic development. He called on the authorities to reform the defense and security agencies.

Georgia's hopes of joining NATO depend on the integrity of the elections

On Wednesday, parliamentary elections will be held in Georgia, about which the president of this state, Mikhail Saakashvili, said that they should be honest. As it is of great importance for the national security of Georgia. According to Western diplomats, Mr. Saakashvili is right. Georgia's democratic achievements have become a key element to convince NATO member countries to support this country's bid. The leaders of the NATO member countries at the summit held in Bucharest this year spoke about this. In a statement issued after the summit, NATO members "expect that the elections in Georgia will be free and fair."

In December, the question of the country's accession to NATO will be considered again. To resolve the crisis, Mr. Saakashvili has set the date of early presidential elections for January.

Mr. Saakashvili won the presidential election, but although these elections were approved by international observers, they also had many shortcomings.

The report of election observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe reports that a large number of the same problems are observed during the current campaign. And yet Georgia is more democratic than its neighboring countries. And none of these countries is trying to join NATO. Mr. Saakashvili's party is likely to win next week. Mr. Saakashvili's party is supported by 44 percent of voters, while the "Council of the Opposition of Georgia" is supported by 12 percent of the population.

The UN Security Council discussed the situation in Nepal

Today, the representative of the UN Secretary-General Karin Landgren reported to the Security Council on the situation in Nepal. She said that the calm in this country was disturbed by clashes between the Youth United Party and the League of Young Communists.

Karin Landgren stated that the existing distrust between the main parties in the country, as well as internal party problems, hinder negotiations on resolving urgent tasks. At the same time, she recalled the progress in the reconstruction of Nepal, including the successful holding of general elections and the transformation of the country from a monarchy to a federal democratic republic.

Recently, the three main parties formed an informal group and started discussing controversial issues related to the peace process and the new constitution.

The most notable recent achievement in the peace process has been the election of the Assembly. Its main task is to develop a new constitution, which should be promulgated by May 28, 2010.

In January 2007, the Security Council established the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) as a special political mission to monitor the implementation of the agreements. She was also tasked with assisting in the conduct of elections and disarmament.

In November 2006, the Nepalese Government and Communist Party leaders signed a peace agreement ending years of conflict in the country. Both sides asked the UN to assist them in implementing the agreements reached.
