INTRODUCTION
Transplantology is one of the most perspective and rapidly growing medicine discipline nowadays. During all the course of treatment transplantologists are challenged with problems concerning almost all the other fields of medicine, necessarily including psychiatry and psychotherapy. Mental status of patients, donors and health care providers strongly influences all the stages of medical care as well as patient’s postoperative quality of life and social adaptation. Also some parameters of mental status can help to predict outcomes and complications of surgical treatment. This field of medical science is still poorly explored and offers a promising field for development of both psychotherapy and transplantology.
2. Chapter 1. MAIN PROBLEMS OF TRANSPLANTOLOGY CONCERNING MENTAL STATUS
Transplantologists encounter many problems concerning mental status of donors, recipients, their families and society as a whole.
The part of this problems will be considered in details below.
2.1 Prediction of the outcomes.
Certain parameters of mental status can influence patient’s adherence to the treatment, postoperative rehabilitation, his quality of life and even the regenerative process itself and the risk of rejection of transplant.
For example, there are some investigations concerning the level of cognitive impairment in patients after kidney transplantation. The third of renal transplant recipients have deficiencies in cognitive functioning and it is higher than expected in a normal distribution of performance [11]. The other investigation shows that the level of cognitive impairment of such patients is associated with allograft survival and mortality [7]. However, the prevalence of cognitive impairment after kidney transplantation is still understudied. The mechanism of this relationship requires further investigation.
