NEWS ANALYSIS BASED ON THE 3 MEANS OF PERSUASION

Abstract: This article talks about the news titled "The Baltic Foreign Ministers refused to participate in the OSCE summit because of Russia's invitation." The analysis of the selected news was carried out based on three methods of persuasion. The question of three methods of persuading the audience has been studied. The authors consider this news taking into account ethos, pathos and logos. Several methods of persuasion have been identified in which people are most often manipulated, and in what ways this happens. The reasons why people fall under the influence of the chosen interpretation of the news are presented. The difference between the three means of persuasion is studied.

Keywords: ethos, pathos, logos, method, elements, phrase, analysis, position

The news from the Al Jazeera source was selected and an analysis was carried out on it.

The purpose of this analysis of the news using ethos, pathos and logos is to understand which emotional, moral and logical aspects were used to convince the audience and form its attitude to the subject of the news. By analyzing the interaction of these elements, it is possible to determine which arguments and persuasion strategies were most effective in this news.

The analysis began with the study of the main elements of rhetoric: ethos, pathos and logos. So, ethos is persuasion through authority; pathos is persuasion through emotions and, finally, logos is persuasion through arguments. The content of the news has been studied, key points have been highlighted and the main topics that are covered have been identified.

Below is an analysis of the news, specifically the name of the news and its content.

  1. The title.

Baltic foreign ministers pull out of OSCE summit over Russia invite

Ministers of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania say presence of Sergey Lavrov risks legitimising Russian war in Ukraine.

Attention is drawn to the phrase "risks legitimising". There is clearly pathos in this phrase, the purpose of which is to evoke positive or negative emotions of the audience. In this case, emotions are more focused on negative coloring than positive.

  1. The main body.

The position of the three Baltic countries is considered.

The foreign ministers of three Baltic states have announced that they will boycott a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was invited to the event.

In a statement on Tuesday, the officials from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania said that a decision to invite Lavrov to attend the summit in Skopje risked legitimising Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We deeply regret the decision enabling the personal participation of Russian Foreign Minister S. Lavrov at the 30th Session of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Skopje,” the statement reads.

“It will only provide Russia with yet another propaganda opportunity.”

In the first paragraph, 2 methods of persuasion are immediately visible – ethos and pathos. They are clearly expressed in the phrases "the foreign ministers of the Baltic states" (ethos) and "will boycott a meeting" (pathos).

When using the ethos correctly, the audience becomes confident that this particular point of view is trustworthy. Of course, there is no doubt about the authority of the foreign ministers of the three Baltic countries.

From the point of view of pathos, then there is a direct negative emotional coloring.

All of the above is confirmed by other phrases from the news. For example, "the officials from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania" (ethos), "risked legitimizing invasion", "we deeply regret the decision" and "propaganda opportunity" (pathos).
