this story is about married couple Soames and Irene. many people would consider such a marriage quite successful but they didn't think so.

Soames was on his way back home where Irene didn't expect him to see. He changed into his park clothes and went into the drawing-room. There was she sitting in the corner of the sofa. She looked like she hadn't slept at all.

he wondered if she was expecting someone. She replied that she was waiting for Mr. Bosinney. then Soames told her that he wanted her to go out to the park with him. she refused to go because of her headache. he said that it would help her feel better but she was silent. a few moments later he claimed she had no idea about what was a wife's duty. he didn't expect to hear her reply but she said that their marriage wasn't successful and he had promised to let her go in that case. he refused to let her go. instead he yelled at her to go and get her hat on. at that moment he realised that she didn't want to miss mr. bosinney's visit. Irene slowly left the room and got ready. they went out.

it was some time since he had gone to the park with her. all that time he was thinking about their marriage and looking through their memories together.

there they saw a man who was running so fast that everyone stared at him after he had passed them.

unexpectedly for soames, Irene greeted that man and claimed that it was the buccaneer.

bosinney reached the end of the trails and came up to them. he wondered what they were doing in the park. Soames made a comment about him but he didn't pay attention to that. instead, he turned to Irene and told her he hoped to see her. Soames didn't hear what Irene said to him. so he decided to invite mr. bosinney to their place.

when they got there, he went to his dressing room and gave them some time to spend on their own. before mr. bosinney went, soames invited him over some time soon.

then he went to bed with certainty that irene was in love with bosinney.

he couldn't sleep. he could hardly breathe. he remembered a few of their nights together.

then suddenly he heard a cry like a soul barred out of heaven was crying for its happiness. Soames shut the window.

then he thought that it was only the peacocks across the water.
