Monologue on DESIGN
You are going to give a talk about DESIGN. | The text of the monologue | Vocabulary, Grammar Structures, Linking Words and Phrases |
Step 1. Introduction 1. Start with a hook sentence that will attract the listener’s attention (a quote, a proverb, etc.). 2. Lead your speech steadily to the main part of your talk. 3. The introduction may consist of 3-6 sentences. | Design plays a key role in our life. We often do not notice it, but that is the way it is. Everything that surrounds us was made by designers. Design is very important for every person, so it gets a lot of attention.
Step 2. Design is Everywhere 2.1 What is design? What do designers do? What are essential elements of a good design? 2.2 Describe the design of an object you own (a laptop, a PC, a phone, a car, a coffee machine, etc.). Speak about its shape, colour, materials, size, special / unique features. | What is design? I think design is part of culture, part of art, because human beings have an inherent sense of beauty. It is human nature to make the objects we use visually pleasing, it is part of our lives. Design add value to people’s lives, but many have misconceptions about design and designer profession. Designer needs to create a good design of an object, which will appeal to people and fulfil users’ needs. Moreover, to turn an idea into something desirable designer should follow creative feelings, generate a host of ideas and select the best ones. I think the most essential elements of any design are a good choice of colour palette, quality materials and the right play with shapes. However, good design should evoke a 'wow effect'. It should impress people so that they want to use it again and again. My phone is excellent value for money. The design of my phone is quite reserved and strict. The phone has a rectangular shape. Most part of the phone is occupied by a large IPS screen with fairly narrow frames around edges. It is black. The back cover is made of glass, which looks very cool. Additionally, there is a fingerprint scanner on the back. The design is impressive
Step 3. Design through the Ages 3.1 Speak about the main ideas, which influenced design at different times (in the 20th century, at the beginning of the 21st century). 3.2 Which design period is the most exciting/interesting for you? Why? | First of all, the period of the early 1990s changed the time of short-lived products. People began to think about ecology of the planet. They were worried about damage to the environment. They start to think about rapid use of energy and raw materials. These ideas influenced design in many areas of society’s life. In those years people started to develop solar-powered cars and electric cars, use aerodynamics in car design, increase the efficiency of old things, recycle waste and produce new products from recycled and biodegradable materials. People focused on product durability. Thanks to this, designers created a lot of energy saving products and products, which people can recycle. In this connection now we know companies like IKEA, companies, which produce their goods from ecofriendly materials and support environmental protection. The period of 1990s is the most exciting for me because during this period there was a change in the direction of development in the world. People have realized that we have environmental problems and something needs to be done about it. People have learned to recycle garbage, use recyclable materials and reduce waste. Besides, electric cars have been developing. I think they will enter our habitual life very soon.
Step 4. Innovations 4.1 How are innovative designs developed? 4.2 Speak about one of the successful designers / design companies of the 20th and 21st centuries. Give examples of innovative ideas implemented by the designer / design company. | In fact, any innovative project is a rather difficult task. But at the same time, if you implement the project, you can achieve worldwide success. All design companies, which have made innovative designs introduced new methods of the work, balanced engineering and technical knowledge with new ideas, fitted with current trends, placed design above profitability and took risks. Thanks to this, they had got a success. For example, Ilon Musk is one of the most famous designers and businessmen in the world. Each time, Elon Musk surprises the public with a new and more perfect design, fitting with current trends. Last year he introduced a new car that can fly. Also, he argues that the design is above profitability. But not even Ilon Musk manages to balance form, function and beauty. In fact, that's the main challenge for a designer now.
Step 5. CREATIVE THINKING Introduce your own extra idea(s) on the topic that hasn’t / haven’t been mentioned before. Justify your choice.
Step 6. Conclusion Summarise the ideas of steps 2,3,4,5. | All in all, design and the profession of a designer in general are very important. Without designers our everyday things would not be so beautiful and comfortable. |
