1. Прочтите и переведите текст.

The idol of Motya and her girl friends at the fur farm is Yuri Stepanov, a graduate of the Moscow Veterinary Academy. Once while in the port of Tiksi he met a Yakut teenager, only nine years his junior. It turned out that the boy had lost both his parents, so Yuri brought the boy home with him; and although he and his wife lived in one rather cramped room, they managed to squeeze in a folding bed for the boy. They also bought him some clothes and footwear, and fixed him up with a job as a general worker at the fur farm. Ever since the young man has been living with Yuri; some people in the village think he is Yuri's brother.

I went to see Yuri one evening. "I love Moscow more than any other city'', he said to me as we sat at the table in his room, sipping wine. Outside a snowstorm was howling in the night. We talked quietly about one thing and another from iron stoves to the construction of the Vilyui gas pipeline; from the shortage of vegetables to the plans for a hydroelectric plant in the lower reaches of the Lena; from the high dog-food prices to the efforts of some enthusiasts in Leningrad to revive the dirigible. Stepanov keeps abreast of all these developments and follows them closely. He is also taking a postgraduate course. But noticed that what interested him most were the problems of the North.

While Lena Pavlova was away in Moscow for the Party Congress, I made the acquaintance of the mother, who had come by reindeer sledge from a far-off-camp. When I called on her, the old Even woman was sitting by the window applying bear decoration to a pair of reindeer-skin top boots for her daughter. Her ancestors were nomads; they lived and died on the move. And today she and her husband are in many ways a nomadic pair, moving all over the tundra with their reindeer, going as far as the Arctic Ocean in summer.

1. Кумир Моти и ее подружек на звероферме – Юрий Степанов, выпускник Московской ветеринарной академии. Однажды в порту Тикси он встретил якутского подростка, который был всего на девять лет младше его. Выяснилось, что мальчик потерял обоих родителей, поэтому Юрий привел мальчика к себе домой, и, хотя они с женой жили в одной довольно тесной комнате, им удалось втиснуть для мальчика раскладушку. Ему также купили одежду и обувь и устроили разнорабочим на звероферму. С тех пор молодой человек живет с Юрием; некоторые люди в деревне думают, что он брат Юрия.

Однажды вечером я встретиться с Юрием. «Я люблю Москву больше, чем какой-либо другой город», — сказал он мне, когда мы сидели за столом в его комнате, потягивая вино. За окном в ночи выла метель. Степанов в курсе всех этих событий, внимательно следит за ними. Он также учится заочно, но я заметил, что больше всего его интересуют проблемы Севера.
