Domestication:

Domestication is a translation strategy that involves adapting the source text to the target culture, language, and norms. In other words, the translator makes the text sound as if it were originally written in the target language, using idioms, expressions, and cultural references that are familiar to the target audience. This strategy is often used in the translation of literary texts, such as novels, poems, and plays, where the translator aims to create a natural and fluent text that is easy to read and understand.

One of the key features of domestication is the use of equivalence, which refers to the principle of finding a word or phrase in the target language that has the same meaning and function as the one in the source language. For example, if the source text contains a cultural reference that is unfamiliar to the target audience, the translator may replace it with a similar reference that is more familiar to the target audience. This helps to ensure that the message is conveyed accurately and effectively.

Another feature of domestication is the use of simplification, which involves reducing the complexity of the source text in order to make it more accessible to the target audience. This can involve the use of shorter sentences, simpler vocabulary, and clearer syntax.

Foreignization:

Foreignization is a translation strategy that involves retaining the foreignness of the source text, by preserving its linguistic and cultural features, even if they are unfamiliar or exotic to the target audience. This strategy is often used in the translation of texts that are highly specialized, technical, or culturally specific, such as scientific or legal documents, where accuracy and precision are paramount.

One of the key features of foreignization is the use of literal translation, which involves translating the source text word-for-word, without adapting it to the target language or culture. This helps to maintain the integrity of the original text, and ensures that the message is not lost in translation.

Another feature of foreignization is the use of cultural notes, which are explanations or footnotes that provide additional information about cultural references, idioms, or expressions that may be unfamiliar to the target audience. This helps to bridge the gap between the source and target cultures, and ensures that the message is conveyed accurately and effectively.
