1.Learners and Teachers, and the Learning and Teaching Context

"Teaching' does not equal 'learning. Teaching does not necessarily lead to

learning. The fact that the first is happening doesn't automatically mean the other

must occur. One person cannot learn anything for anyone else. It has to be

done by your own personal effort. Nobody else can transmit understanding or skills into your head.

And to develop learner’s learning skills there’s a teacher.

There are 3 kinds of teacher:

Subject matter Methodology People

Explainer +

Involver + +

Enabler + + +

And different ways of teaching suits different learners. But every teacher (explainer involver

enabler) should have these qualities:

these are respect (a positive and non-judgmental regard for another person),

empathy (being able to see things from the other person's perspective, as fi looking through their eyes) and authenticity (being oneself without hiding behind job titles, roles or masks).

As for the learners they’re split into groups. The traditional idea of humans having a single, unified 'intelligence' may be

rather limiting. Howard Gardener has suggested that people could have seven 'intelligences' (maybe more!):

1 linguistic

2 visual

3 musical

4 logical/mathematical

5 bodily/feeling

6 interpersonal (contact with other people)

7 intrapersonal (understanding oneself) gests We probably all have these seven intelligences but in different proportions and every learner should choose a way of learning due to him or her preferences and needs.

2. Language Analysis (Systems and Skills)

There’re some skills a learner needs to know to improve the language.

Receptive skills: listening and reading

1 Task based listening

* get a general overview o f the main story or message o f a conversation;

* catch specific details such as names, numbers, addresses, etc.

2 The task feedback circle

* helps to plan useful listening lessons if you simply follow it round

* from general to specific

3 How do we listen?

* top down
