Congenital heart anomaly or congenital heart defect

Congenital heart anomaly or congenital heart defect (CHD) is a defect in the structure of the heart or great vessels that is present at birth, the most common birth defect – in 4 to 75 per 1000 live births Congenital heart defects are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths.

Врожденный порок сердца – это дефект в структуре сердца или крупных сосудов, присутствующий с рождения, наиболее частые врожденные дефекты – от 4 до 75 случаев на 1000 живых родов (новорожденных). ВПС – основная причина детской смертности (от пороков).

There are many types of congenital heart disease and they sometimes occur in combination. Some of the more common defects include:

• septal defects – where there's a hole between two of the heart's chambers;
• valvular defects – where the valves, which controls the flow of blood, is narrower than normal;
• transposition of the great arteries – where the pulmonary and aortic valves and the arteries they're connected to have swapped positions;
• underdeveloped heart – where part of the heart doesn’t develop properly making it difficult for it to pump enough blood around the body or lungs.

Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a CHD in which blood flows between the atria of the heart. Some flow is a normal condition both pre-birth and immediately post-birth via the foramen ovale; however, when this does not naturally close after birth it is referred to as a patent (open) foramen ovale (PFO).

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a defect in the ventricular septum, the wall dividing the left and right ventricles of the heart. It is the most common CHD, which found in 30-60% of all newborns with a CHD, or about 2-6 per 1000 births.
