Certainly Mrs. Foster should have divorced her husband. The question is - would it help her to become a healthy, established personality? Indeed, in her married life, these opportunities were actively suppressed by her husband. So, the situation seems to me personally rather ambiguous.

In the modern world, we have a worldwide experience of divorces for good and not so good reasons. People have devalued the concept of marriage and now the issue of divorce is not very often dragged out on the back burner.

As for the time period of our story, marriage had a very high role. Society was assessed the marital status first and foremost (especially if it was a woman). According to some reports, the divorce rate was only 8 out of a thousand couples in 1920 in USA. Therefore, we cannot say with certainty that Mrs. Foster "should" have divorced. It must have been negatively perceived by society and women were afraid of it.

However, we can consider the situation from the point of view of morality and mental health of our heroine. Then my point of view is the same - they needed to get a divorce.

Mrs. Foster would then have a chance to live her life the way she wanted. She could not ask permission of her husband, could not tolerate offensive statements and disparaging attitude. Finally, she could find the love of her life. People who love and treat their chosen ones with respect often help to cope with any problems. Mrs. Foster had plenty of them.

Despite the contradictions that arose in those years, life was short at all times. Therefore, I am for people to stop tolerating each other, otherwise it leads to irreversible and sad consequences.

Which we saw, thanks to the story of Roald Dahl.
