INTRODUCTION

           Many existing languages of the world use abbreviated lexical units in their written and spoken speech. Each time the number of abbreviations grows with great speed, making it very difficult to keep track of all the new abbreviations. The daily continuous increase in the amount of information, which includes complex terms and names, encourages writers to reduce the volume of text by introducing various abbreviations.

Thus, the topic of this research work is “English abbreviations in social media”.

The subject of the research work is peculiarities of abbreviation in modern English.

The object of the research work is abbreviation. 

           The aim of this term paper is to analyze the use of abbreviations in English. Since the aim is set, the following tasks have to be solved in order to achieve it:

1. Examine the nature of abbreviation, its basic properties and characteristics;
2. Identify and characterize the main ways of abbreviation in English;
3. Research reasons and conditions for the emergence of abbreviated lexical units;
4. Examine the significance of abbreviation in contemporary English.

            The relevance of the chosen topic is that abbreviation is one of the main types of word formation in English, which makes the study of abbreviation very important.

            To write a term paper, we will need materials that refer to modern                                linguists in the field of theoretical lexicology and word formation of the English language. Works that reveal the basics of abbreviation, reasons and peculiarities of its emergence and types will be considered.

         1.  ORIGIN OF ABBREVIATION IN ENGLISH

         1.1. History of abbreviation appearance                                                                                                    

Abbreviations have long been used in writing by many peoples, including English, which in turn borrowed abbreviations from Latin. During the development of the English language, the methods and specifics of abbreviations have changed over time.  In this connection, the causes and spheres of occurrence of abbreviations changed, which eventually led to successive stages of development of abbreviations. [2]

  Before reading the history of abbreviations, it is necessary to understand what the abbreviation is.

Abbreviation (Ital. abbreviatura from Lats. brevis «short», abbreevio «abbreviate») - a word formed by shortening a word or word combination and read by alphabetical name of the initial letters or by the initial sounds of the words included in it. [3]

As already mentioned, the use of abbreviations has been common since ancient times. The abbreviation traces its history from the Sumerians, whose writing is considered the first recorded on Earth (IV c. BC). The purpose of the abbreviations was to save material used as a carrier of text information: birch, ceramic tablets, parchment, etc. As well as for the speed of writing commonly used and well-known words and expressions.
