The military conflict in Sudan has been going on for more than ten years and has a large number of victims. According to official data, more than 300,000 people have died as a result of violent conflicts in the country since 2003. According to some reports, the total number of victims may be even higher.
The beginning of the military conflict in Sudan is related to the rivalry between Arabs and Negroid ethnic groups in Darfur, one of the country's provinces. The main causes of the conflict are the allocation of land resources, religious and ethnic conflicts, competition for political power, as well as relations between the center and the periphery of the country.
One of the biggest problems standing in the way of resolving the conflict is the refusal of the Sudanese regime to acknowledge the problem and take steps to solve it. The Sudanese government has accused separatist groups and external forces of destabilizing the country and asserted its right to fight hard against the destroyers.
As a result of military operations in Sudan, not only the population suffers, but also the country's economy. The conflict led to a decrease in oil production, which accounts for more than 70% of all export revenues of the country. This, in turn, led to a decrease in state budget revenues, a worsening of the socio-economic situation of the population, and an aggravation of the humanitarian crisis.
To date, the military conflict in Sudan continues, and the situation in the country is quite complex and tense. In May 2021, the national army removed political powers and overthrew a transitional government, which was formed with a group of civilian and military leaders, following the 2019 ouster of dictator Omar al-Bashir. Afterwards, many people took to the streets to express their protest against the military regime.
The US government, the European Union and other international organizations condemn the military coup and call for the resumption of dialogue between the parties to the conflict. The UN also notes the significant number of internally displaced persons affected by the conflict and calls for security and humanitarian assistance. In this case, the main goal of the international community is to reduce the violence in the country and establish a peaceful dialogue between the military and civilian leaders of Sudan. It is also important to ensure security for the country's citizens who are suffering from violence and humanitarian crisis.
To resolve the conflict in Sudan, a comprehensive approach must be implemented, which must include political, economic and social measures. Important elements of this approach are the dialogue between different ethnic and political groups, the deployment of UN peacekeeping missions, the provision of humanitarian aid to the population, as well as the creation of favorable conditions for the recovery of the country's economy.
The adoption of international sanctions is another tool that can help resolve the conflict in Sudan. Such sanctions may prohibit the importation of weapons and special equipment into the country, as well as freeze the bank accounts of some Sudanese officials involved in the conflict. This may incentivize the Sudanese regime to become more actively involved in the resolution of the conflict and to strengthen control over its security forces.
