The executive branch of the Government is responsible for enforcing the laws of the land. The Vice President, department heads (Cabinet members), and heads of independent agencies assist in this capacity.
The President may sign or veto legislation passed by Congress and has the power to recommend measures to Congress. The Congress may override a presidential veto but only by a two-thirds majority in each house. The President is elected for a fixed term of four years and may serve a maximum of two terms.
The position of Vice-President is elected on the same time as that of the President and has the same four-year term of office. In practice, a Vice-Presidential candidate is chosen to "balance the ticket" in the Presidential election and, for all practical purposes.
Executive departments are vast organizations that conduct a wide range of government activities. Department heads advise the President on policy issues and help execute those policies. There are also independent agencies (United States Postal Service, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Independent agencies help to execute policy or provide special services.
Исполнительная власть правительства несет ответственность за соблюдение законов о земле. В этом качестве помогают вице-президент, руководители департаментов (члены кабинета) и руководители независимых агентств. |
