на английском языке.

Many years ago in December, two poorly dressed children stood on the banks of the winter canal in Holland. They had wooden skates. They could only dream about normal skates. Their mother was a poor woman. They lived in a small house. Hans was 15, his sister Gretel was 12. Hans was a strong boy with clear eyes. Gretel was quick and flexible. Skating along the canal brought them a great pleasure.  Holland is an amazing country. This is a country of contradictions. People here in some areas suffer from a lack of water. Raff Brinker, the head of the family, worked on the dams, but, one day, he fell down and lost his mind and memory.  He could only lie. Ruff worked. She grew vegetables. She spent a lot of time with her husband. Children also worked and went to school very seldom. Hans and Gretel listened about competitions. It will be skating competitions in the end of December. The prize will be a wonderful new skates. Children met with Hilda. She was a kind girl. She always helped poor people, including our main characters. Gretel gave money to Hans. She wanted Hans decided who will have the skates. Hans could not take money for nothing. Then Gilda asked Hans to do the same chain as Gretel had. Hans acted nobly. He decided to buy skates for Gretel. But then Hans had an opportunity to earn money. So, he had money to buy his own skates. Many years ago, when Ruff worked, this family saved money. It was a big sum. The labor of workers could bring much money. But, unfortunately, money was gone. Mattie tried to ask her husband about it, because she did not know where did he hide it, but he understand nothing. Hans went to the city to buy skates, where he met a famous doctor, which agreed to come to his house and examine father. Jacobs’s cousin came from America. He wanted to take part in a competition too. His name was Ben Dobbs. Jacob and Ben took advantage of free time and decided to go in a trip. All boys decided to go with them. Meanwhile, Hans and Gretel were happy that they have new skates. So, children were in Amsterdam very soon. Ben admired the city. Then they go to Haarlem. When they went into the coffee shop, Peter, one of the boys, discovered that their money was lost. They had to return home, because they did not have any food to eat. Boys agreed to go in a trip later. On the way home, they met Hans. He returned them a purse that he found when he was in a hurry to Leyden to a doctor Beckman. Hans wanted to ask him to come to his house faster, because his father began to feel worse. He had a fit and he could burn his wife in the stove. Fortunately, Gretel came and gave him a soup. So, father calmed down. Boys could go to Amsterdam again. Peter said that they would go to a doctor and tell him this story.  Also, Peter suggested Hans an extra work. Peter’s father wanted to do an order for a good payment. So, boys went to travel. But Ben became ill. He was very tired. Friends decided to go to Leyden by boat. One of the boatmen agreed to take them. Ben felt better. When they came to Leiden, they began to look for a hotel. Peter failed to see Dr. Beckman after coming to the hotel. The owner of the hotel said that doctor was not in the town. Then Peter wrote a note and gave it to the owner of the hotel so that he would pass it to the doctor.  The next day they abandoned the hotel. On the next day, friends abandoned the hospital. It was 30 mills to Gaaga. They were at Peter’s sister house for three days. It was very fan. They rode around the city. Also, they visited a museum and art gallery. On the last day they had a rest at home and went to their hometown in the morning. Meanwhile, the doctor was at the Brinker’s house. Raff’s operation was unnecessary. Mattie could not agree with that for a long time, because her husband could die. But the hope of his recovery was great. The doctor ordered Gretel to leave the house. It will be very difficult and fearfully to see the operation. She went out and cried for a long time. She fell asleep. She could freeze and die, but Gilda saved Gretel. She woke her up and warmed her. Gilda made her to go around the house. The operation was completed successfully. Ruff came to himself. Gilda took Gretel to home, and she did not go to school. So, she got a rebuke, but she was glad for the Brinker’s. In the morning doctor came to the Brinker’s and his visit was the cause of their disappointment. He told that this food can kill him. The food which they could buy was bad for the sick man. He needed meat, soup, wine and a warm light blanket. But this family did not have money for that and their hope of the recovery was gone again. Fortunately, doctor sent a servant with a wine, a beautiful bad and a warm blanket. Doctor’s housemaid brought a meat, soup and white bread. In the evening Ruff felt very good and he asked Mattie to put him next to the fireplace. He wanted to leave his bed and go to work. Mattie wanted to ask Ruff about their 1000 guilders, which were lost. She was afraid to frustrate him and she said nothing. She told that they had spent all money during 10 years. She only asked him if he remember the place where this money was. He told that he had buried money under a willow which was behind the house. At night Hans and Mattie went out the house and began to unearth the ground under the willow, but money was gone. In the morning Hans went to Amsterdam to find a job. He met Annie Bauman. She was returning home. Annie was a friend of his family. Hans tell her about his joy and about his need of money. He told that he had wanted to sell his skates. Annie took skates. She told that he had known who could buy them. So, Hans didn’t found a job in Amsterdam. The only one hope was to go to Peter’s father. And he got lucky. Hans got a job. He had to create a porch in Peter’s father new house. He returned home. Hans learned good news. Annie sold the skates for seven guilders. Also, his father felt better and better. Children started to play outside. Annie was a fairy and she promised to fulfill any children’s wishes. Hans wanted to find a thing which he had sought at night. It is strange, but a wallet with money was fond before sunset. Money was buried near the old stamp. Mattie and Hans forgot that they had felled this willow. All family was very glad to have money. One day, Mattie decided to ask her husband about the watch, which she did not sell in a hard time. She knew that, probably, this watch was very important for Ruff. So, it was a thing of a young man. He committed a crime. This person told that he had not wanted to do it. He asked Ruff to help him to run away. They swam across the river on the boat and a young man gave him a watch. He asked Ruff to give back it to his father. But Ruff did not manage to do that. He forgot the address and a surname of this family, because it was 10 years ago. During the dinner, family was talking about this watch. Suddenly, the doctor came to their house. Mattie thought it was a clock of the Bumpgoffens. Mattie asked if doctor had known this family. He answered that they had lived in the other country. When he watched the clock and red initials, he was shocked. This was a clock of his sun, Lawrence. They returned to their owner. Doctor told them a story. The sun was his assistant. Lawrence got a task to send a medicine to the sick man. But Lawrence made a mistake and sent a poison. The sick man died on this day. And the reason of his death was a disease, but not a poison. The father noticed this mistake. But Lawrence did not know that. He thought that he became the reason of the death of this person. Ruff told that he would try to recall the address. Doctor thanked the Brinker’s and went to his own house. It was the day of competition. Hans guessed that Annie did not sell his skates to somebody. She bought them herself. Hans redeemed the skates. Meantime, Gretel got ready for the start. It was difficult to recognize Gretel. She had new clothes. So, girls performed the first. In the first race Gretel won. Also, she was the best in the third and in the final race. She became the queen of skaters. During the boy’s competition Peter tore the belt accidentally. Then, Hans refused to take part in a competition and gave his belt to Peter. In the end, Peter won among the boys. So, Gretel and Peter became winners. Gretel ran to her parents and showed them her new beautiful skates. Ruff recovered completely and both parents were congratulated Gretel. During the dinner, Ruff remembered the name that Lawrence had pronounced. So, it was easy to find him. Peter, Lambert and Ben came to the Brinkers. They were going to go to Amsterdam. Peter returned the belt to Hans. Gretel forgot to take a skate case. She was in a great hurry to her parents and she did not go to Mefrau van Gleeck to get it. So, Peter gave the case to Gretel. Also, Peter congratulated Ruff on recovery. The initials were written on the case. It turned out that this case was made by the person which they were looking for. He was the son of Ruff’s doctor. Huns ran to the doctor. Fortunately, Ben knew this person. He saw him several times. This person lived in America near the Ben’s house in Birmingham. In the evening the doctor and Hans went to the Brinkers’ house and the savior of the whole family learned a lot to find his son. So, the doctor found his son, Lawrence, and they went to the Brinkers together. Ruff had already worked and children had gone to school. Lawrence was going to be a salesman in Amsterdam. The famous doctor offered Hans to become his own successor. Hans agreed with that. He studied at the Institute and became a famous doctor. He married Annie. Gretel became a wonderful singer and the most beautiful woman in Amsterdam. Peter married Gilda. A frivolous Katrina, their friend, refused Karl and she was alone all her life. Richie, who always laughed at Ruff and Gretel, became a famous writer. Her life was very difficult and it changed her for the better. Karl’s life was unsuccessful. His father went broke. Karl worked as an accountant. But Ruff and Mattie got rich. They lived in Amsterdam. They built a cottage near that old house and they came to this place to rest with their children and grandchildren.
