1. About myself

Let me introduce myself. My name’s Xavier Dupont. I’m nineteen and I’m a student. I study engineering. I’ve always had a lot of brilliant ideas for inventing and my ambition is to be a millionaire by the age of twenty-five.

I’m from France. I also learn English because I need it for my job. My English is not perfect but I do my best to make progress. I also know a little Spanish, so I can speak three languages.

I live in an apartment not far from the city centre. It takes me about thirty minutes to get to my University. My days are very busy and I get up early. But I’m not a morning person, so it’s always difficult!

When the weather is good, I like getting out of the city. It doesn’t matter where to, to the beach, or to the country, or to the forest. It just makes me feel alive.

I’m not married but I have a girlfriend. Her name’s Alice. She is English and she works in advertising. She’s very friendly and she’s got a good sense of humour. We have much in common with her – we both like music and travelling. I also like football. I’m a football fan! In my spare time I watch matches on TV or surf the Internet. I also like playing computer games and meeting people. At weekends my friends come to hang out at my place and we have a great time.  

As to my character, I’m optimistic and punctual. I’m sociable and I always get on well with other people.

At the moment I’m working very hard because I have exams soon, so I’m spending a lot of time studying.

6. Work in pairs. Choose three things to talk about from the list below. Tell your partner about it, give details and answer your partner’s questions. Then swap roles.

2. Our University

N.P. Ogarev Mordovia State University was formed in October 1957 on the base of Agronomy Pedagogical Institute dating back to 1931. In 1970 it was named after an outstanding Russian poet N.P. Ogarev.

Now it is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the region, which offers a large number of academic programmes for undergraduate, graduate and post graduate students. In 2010 the University received its present status “National Research University”. The University is headed by the Rector.

The University includes 10 faculties: Biotechnology and Biology, Geography, Mathematics and Information Technologies, Architecture and Construction Engineering, Philology, Law, Economics, Foreign languages, Faculty of Pre-University training, and Faculty of Advanced Training; 7 Institutes such as Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Institute of National Culture, History and Sociology Institute, Agriculture Institute, Mechanics and Power Engineering Institute, Institute of Electronics and Lighting engineering, and Medicine Institute.
