The University of my dream

Introduction

Good afternoon, everybody. Today I am going to talk about The University of my dream - National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute). The structure of my presentation on the next slide: пункты что укажу. Let’s move on to the next slide.

The History of MEPhI (Short Version)

MEPhI was created on November 23, 1942. Its first name was the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Ammunition (MMIB). It trained engineers to produce weapons like shells and bombs for World War II.

In 1945, everything changed. The Soviet Union started its nuclear (atomic) program. The institute was transferred to this new program and changed its name to the Moscow Mechanical Institute (MMI). A very important Engineering-Physics Department was created to train specialists for the new atomic industry.

In 1953, the institute got its famous name: the Moscow Engineering-Physics Institute (MEPhI). Now, all its departments were focused on nuclear energy and defense technology.

Over time, MEPhI opened branches in closed cities where nuclear research was done. This helped train specialists directly in those places.

In 2008, MEPhI became the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI". This new status confirmed its position as a leading university in nuclear research and education.

Some Traditions of MEPhI

Mental Health Week

Every year on October 10th, World Mental Health Day is celebrated around the world. Following tradition, MEPhI holds a Mental Health Week during this time. Students, teachers, and staff can learn how to manage aggression, avoid emotional burnout, and improve their psychological well-being.

First-Year Student Initiation Ceremony

There is a tradition for new bachelor's and specialist degree students to gather in front of the outdoor stage in the university campus. The rector of MEPhI, Vladimir Shevchenko, opens the ceremony and wishes the students faith, hope, and love.

Welcoming Guests and New Students

At one of MEPhI's branch campuses, there is a ritual to welcome guests and new students. They are greeted with a traditional karavay bread and condensed milk. This sweet welcome symbolizes the wish for a "sweet" and successful student life.

University staff

Over the years, several Nobel Prize laureates have worked at the university:

Nikolay Basov (1922–2001) was an academician who worked at MEPhI from 1960 until 2001. In 1978, he founded and became the head of the Department of Quantum Electronics (later known as Laser Physics). Together with A. M. Prokhorov, he discovered the principles for amplifying and generating electromagnetic radiation by quantum systems. This work made it possible to create the first quantum generator (a maser) using a beam of ammonia molecules.

Pavel Cherenkov (1904–1990) was an academician who worked at MEPhI from 1951 to 1972. His main research was in physical optics, nuclear physics, and high-energy particle physics. In 1934, he discovered a unique blue glow in transparent liquids when they were exposed to fast charged particles. This phenomenon was later named the Cherenkov effect. In 1958, he, together with I. E. Tamm and I. M. Frank, received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery and explanation of this effect.

Igor Tamm (1895–1971) was an academician who worked at MEPhI from 1945 to 1950. He was the first head of the Department of Theoretical Nuclear Physics. His main scientific work was in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, radiation theory, nuclear physics, and particle physics.

Outstanding graduates

The university's graduates also include Nobel Prize winners, cosmonauts, academicians, and other famous people:

Andrey Sakharov — Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975 for his fearless support for fundamental principles of peace and his brave fight against the abuse of power and all forms of oppression.

Nikolay Semyonov — In 1956, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his development of the theory of chain reactions.

Nikolay Rukavishnikov and Sergey Avdeev — Both are cosmonauts. Sergey Avdeev held the record for the most total time spent in space aboard the Mir station (747 days, 14 hours, and 14 minutes over three flights) and performed 10 spacewalks.

Alexander Bolozdynya — Director of the Center for Nuclear Medicine and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Theoretical and Experimental Physics.

University structure: colleges, schools or departments

Institutes (Specialized Schools within the University)

MEPhI is organized into several institutes, each focusing on a specific field:

Institute of Nuclear Physics and Technology (ИЯФиТ)

Institute of Laser and Plasma Technologies (ЛаПлаз)

Institute of Engineering Physics for Biomedicine (ИФИБ)

Institute of Nanotechnology in Electronics, Spintronics and Photonics (ИНТЭЛ)

Institute of Intelligent Cybernetic Systems (ИИКС)

Institute of Physics and Technology Intelligent Systems (ИФТИС)

Institute of Financial Technologies and Economic Security (ИФТЭБ)

Institute of International Relations (ИМО)

Faculties (Other Main Divisions)

In addition to the institutes, the university has several faculties:

Faculty of Business Informatics and Management of Complex Systems (ФБИУКС)

Higher School of Engineering (ВИШ)

Faculty of Part-Time (Evening) Studies

Faculty for International Students

Faculty of Professional Development and Retraining

Branches in Other Cities

MEPhI has a network of branch campuses in several Russian cities, including:

Obninsk, Ozersk, Lesnoy, Trekhgorny, Sarov, Snezhinsk, Volgodonsk, Dimitrovgrad, Seversk

Pre-University Division (Предуниверситарий)

This is a special department with the status of a school. It includes two prestigious lyceums (No. 1511 and No. 1523) and other preparation centers. Here, students deeply study mathematics, physics, computer science, and other specialized subjects to prepare for university.
