Famous People of our University

I would like to tell you about the first rector of our university. His name was Augustine Betancourt. He was born in Spain in 1758. He lived and worked there until 1808. In 1808 Betancourt moved to Russia.

Betancourt was a world-renowned scientist, an outstanding statesman, a teacher, a major engineer, inventor, a designer, an architect and an urban planner. Also he was one of the founders of the theory of machines and mechanisms. He built bridges, canals and roads, civil and industrial buildings. Betancourt was a member of different scientific societies.

In period from 1818 to 1822 Betancourt was the Chief of railways. Then he supervised the construction of outstanding architectural ensembles in the central part of the city. Under his leadership the 1st permanent bridge across the Malaya Nevka, bridges on the Moscow Highway and in Peterhof were built. With Betancourt’s participation technical means were created for the construction of the columns of St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Alexander Column on Palace Square. In 1821 a more perfect flatbed bridge was built across the Neva and the coastal abutments according to Betancourt’s project. In memory of this fact a stele with his name is installed on the University Embankment.
