Функции The Past Simple Tense:

- употребляется для описания законченных действий в прошлом

I graduated from university in 2010.

He left home at 7.30 in the morning.

- употребляется для описания цепочки последовательно происходивших действий в прошлом

James Sainsbury set up a dairy in 1869. The business expanded and grew, and eventually  became the largest chain of supermarkets in Britain.

Обратите внимание! The Past Simple Tense употребляется

- с указателями времени, которые относятся к законченному периоду времени в прошлом

- не имеет значения, сколько времени продолжалось описываемое действие в прошлом

The Japanese economy grew very fast in the 1960s.

- пребывание в определенном месте связано с определенным периодом протекания действия в прошлом (как только завершилось пребывание в определенном месте, завершился период действия, с ним связанный)

He did a lot of things when he was on a business trip.

Fill in the gaps with the verbs in the correct form:
