What is the impact of developing technology on children?
Are developing technologies taking over your child’s life? According to a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average child in western countries, ages 8-18, spends over 7.5 hours a day using technological gadgets. [1] Due to these statistics it is clearly seen that children are relying too much on technology, spending more time with gadgets. It is the modern world, where children and teenagers use technology for things such as to increase their range of view on various topics, being social by keeping in touch with friends, and helping parents to know the location of the children. However, there are disadvantages of relying on technology. According to Kristina E. Hatch in her scholarly paper, ‘Determining the Effect of Technology on Children’, we have to be wary of the loss of privacy that technology brings to children.[2] Examples such as obesity, obsession and lack of physical activity are making apparent that video games and other types of technology are having negative effect on children. Although, technological tools have its own drawbacks, it is difficult to recognize the real impact of technology on children.
Negative Impacts of Technology on Children
Technological development brings some negative effect to the children such as addiction to the technology tools, a lack of physical activity, obesity, psychological disorders, and degradation of the child and loss of privacy. Scientists are now beginning to tease out the effects of all this electronic engagement. Too much screen time may be linked to an increased incidence of risky behaviors, and more social network activity seems to correspond to mood problems among teens. According to the study conducted by American Journal of Epidemiology, adolescents spend an average of 25 to 30 hours per week watching TV and using computers. Moreover, while half of parents surveyed in a 2010 study said they always or often set limits on screen time, 18 percent of their children really disagreed. In addition, Deacon University Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research study of 800 children found 40% of families had 2 TV sets with 57% of the children aged 10 to 12 having a TV in their bedroom. Another study by the Centre found 20% of children ate their dinner in front of TV at least four times a week.[3] The given statistics with no doubt reveal the modern obsession of the children to technology. Consequently, this addiction can be linked to many of the health problems facing adolescents today.
Another problem is that technology may over stimulate and actually impair brain functioning, which leads to health problems such as eating disorder, obesity, limitation of physical activity and eye fatigue. Information given by The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 10 percent of preschool age children and 15 percent of 6- to 19-year olds, can be considered overweight. More than 40 studies have been conducted on the matter, and many indicate that the availability of technology contributes to a sedentary lifestyle and weight gain in children. A Canadian study conducted in 2003 and published in the "International Journal of Obesity" linked 7- to 11-year-olds' television and computer use to a significantly increased risk to being overweight or obese.[4] The study found that children who spent 3 or more hours a day in front of the television or the computers had between a 17- and 44-percent increase of risk of being overweight, or a 10- to 61-percent increase risk in obesity. In addition, children can experience many of the same symptoms related to computer use. Extensive viewing of the computer screen can lead to eye discomfort, fatigue, blurred vision and headaches, dry eyes and other symptoms of eyestrain. These symptoms may be caused by poor lighting, glare, an improper work station set-up, vision problems of which the person was not previously aware, or a combination of these factors.[5] Also, the impact of rapidly advancing technology on the developing child has seen an increase of physical, psychological and behavior disorders that the health and education systems are just beginning to detect. Diagnoses of ADHD, autism, coordination disorder, developmental delays, unintelligible speech, learning difficulties, sensory processing disorder, anxiety and depression are associated with technology overuse, and are increasing at an alarming rate.[6] For these reasons it can be clearly seen that such impact of technology could bring for further negative effects as a declension of the brain functioning.
Further analysis of the impact of technology on the developing child indicates that the use of technology leads to the degradation of the child. This can be best described as a declension in the gaining knowledge, paying attention and in the children’s way of thinking. For instance, Dr. Dmitri Christakis found out that each hour of TV watched daily between the age of 0 and 7 years equated to a 10% chance of attention problems by age seven years. The effects of technology on children are complicated, with both benefits and costs. Whether technology helps or hurts in the development of your children’s thinking depends on what specific technology is used and how and what frequency it is used. At least early in their lives, the power to dictate your children’s relationship with technology and, as a result, its influence on them, from synaptic activity to conscious thought.[7]In addition, children who spend too much time in front of the television or playing video games tend to have worse grades than those students who are active and involved in extracurricular activities. Studies have shown that since they are so used to multi-tasking they have trouble focusing all of their attention on schoolwork.[8] However, some people consider that technology brings positive effect in learning skills. For example, children should be able to use computer because it has positive effect on their writing skills. Word processors are the great tools for their writing skills because the word processor fixes their errors so they can receive better knowledge and memory how to use and write the words. Nevertheless, studies performed by Dr. Rosen at Cal State showed that 16-18 year olds perform 7 tasks, on average, at one time like texting on their cell phone; sending instant messages while checking Face book with the television on.[9] In an article in the New York Times, scientists discussed the negative effects of new multitaskers. According to their research, “multitaskers actually have more trouble focusing and shutting out irrelevant information and they experience more stress.”[10] From this it is clearly seen that instead of being master in multitasking, children have become unable to focus, due to constant bursts of new information.
