SOME PROBLEMS OF ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

1. Until recently man has dealt mainly with various

problems of science and technology. But now control of the side

effects1) of production is becoming of great importance. The Earth

is our home, but much of it is dirty and dying. By the year 2030,

scientists report that 25% of all animals, birds, fish and insects

may be extinct.

2. It is well known that since the early days of his

existence man has been destroying the nature surrounding him.

We cannot deny that environment pollution is the most

dangerous side effect of human activity. It is causing global

changes in the environment and deterioration2)

of the biosphere.

The scientists who are now tackling

environment protection represents such areas of knowledge as

biology, ecology, chemistry, geography, physics, economics,

and the law.

3. The sharp increase in water pollution is alarming. The

pollutants come mainly from municipal and industrial wastes. It

is common knowledge that water pollution contributes greatly

to an increase in the sickness rate among the population. A large

majority of these cases are caused by the lack of clean water.

4. As for air pollution it should be emphasized that in big

cities it results from combustion processes. Many houses, cars,

buses, factories, power stations send directly into the open air

the wastes of combustion process. One of Europe’s and North

America’s most serious pollution problems is “acid rain”4). This

happens when factories send gases and chemicals into the air.

There they mix, and the mixture is carried for hundreds of miles

by the wind and finally falls back to earth. This “acid rain” 3)

kills fish and trees.

5. Today, many scientists and world leaders realize that

the Earth is in danger. We need cleaner, healthier planet.

Millions of ordinary people – both young and old – understand

this, too. Some of them belong to the so-called “Green” or

earth-friendly organizations in countries all over the world.
