A legal system could be interpreted as a set of legal institutions, procedures, and rules. The term "legal system" can also refer to the nature and content.

One of the most important legal concepts is "legal tradition"or  " legal family". The Romano-Germanic family, the Common law family and the family of Socialist law are considered to be the three highly influential legal traditions in the contemporary world.

Civil law is divided into two streams: the codified Roman law and uncodified Roman law.  Civil law is highly systematized and structured and relies on declarations of broad, general principles.

Common law is the legal tradition which evolved in England from the 11th century.Common law is the foundation of private law, not only for England, wales and Ireland, but also in forty-nine USA, nine Canadian provinces and most countries.

Statutory law is basic to both the civil and common law.In common law jurisdictions, most rules  are found in the jurisprudence and statutes.

A mixed legal system is derived from more than one legal tradition or legal family.
