Sir James Matthew Barrie was born in a large working-class family, May 9th, 1860. His father was a weaver, and he was his ninth child.
A huge fan of theater from the beginning, he organized plays and played as an actor in them as well since he was a child. His best-known work is Peter Pan. First written as a theatrical play, it became a huge success so James adapted it into a novel. He also wrote, “Ibsen’s spirit”, “Jane Annie”, “Quality street”, “The Admirable Crichton” and so on. The children’s drama Peter Pan by James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) was first presented on the London stage in 1904, and then in the form of a novel in 1911.
The main characters of the story are:
- Peter Pan, an ageless boy who can fly, who will never be an adult. Peter is described as mischievous, funny, sometimes cruel, who knows only games
- Pirate Hook, Peter Pan's sworn enemy;
- three children of the Darling family: a girl Wendy, she always takes care of everyone. Wendy realizes that sooner or later she will mature and she is ready to become an adult, because sometimes she behaves like an adult. And her two brothers, John and Michael;
- children’s nanny-dog, which the father of the family "hired" instead of a living person, for it turned out cheaper;
- Mr and Mrs Darling, Wendy's parents
- various fairies, the most important fairy - Ding-Ding.
The Darlings are living together with their three children at the home number fourteen. They have a girl named Wendy and two sons, John, and Michael. While Mrs. Darling takes care of children and tells them fairytales, her husband’s role is to provide them a warm home, clothes and a sense of good manners.
The Darlings are hiring a nanny, who is taking care of children, changing their clothes and keeping them clean. The nnany is called Nana, and actually is a dog. Besides Nana, Darlings also had a house keeper Lisa, for help around the house work.
They were living in perfect harmony until one day, a boy with an interesting name appeared. And this boy is Peter Pan.
Peter Pan has been living in Netlandia for many years. He has a fairy girlfriend who follows him everywhere. Her name is Ding-Ding. Every night he listens to the Wending’s stories near the window and returns to Neverland where he tells the stories to the lost boys – boys taken away from their parents.
Onсe Peter lost his shadow, it is in the nightstand in the children's room. One night, Peter Pan returns for his shadow while the three children are sleeping in the nursery, parents aren’t at home and unfortunately Nana is locked outside the home.
They find Peter’s shadow, but he cannot stick it back on and starts to cry.
The crying awakes Wendy, and of course she wants to know why he is crying. She sews back on Peter’s shadow.
Peter is asking to get Wendy to leave with him to Neverland. Wendy becomes very upset and decides to take John and Michael home immediately. Meanwhile, Nana is very suspicious and starts to bark. She ultimately breaks free and goes to the house where Mr and Mrs Darling are at a party. They sense danger and go with Nana, but alas they are too late and the kids are gone.
The children are flying to Neverland which is far away. It’s very tiring, when they fall asleep, they start to fall, and Peter often waits until the absolute last moment to save them. To him it’s quite funny to watch. They are hungry, and he teaches them to steal food out of the beaks of birds.
Ding-Ding doesn’t like Wendy and she wants to get rid of she. When the three children arrive at Neverland, Wendy’s role is changed to that of mother.
There is a rivalry between Peter Pan and Captain Hook who lost his hand because of Peter Pan. Peter cut off Captain Hook’s right arm and fed it to a crocodile.
Pirates somehow manage to sneak their way to Wendy’s house and attack and capture some of the lost boys and Wendy as well. They take them to the pirate ship and prepare their execution. Wendy act brave, refusing their proposals to step on their side as their lady. Peter Pan remaine free, but Captain Hook put some poison in his glass while he was sleeping. When he are trying to drink the poison, fairy Tinkerbell arrive, saving him at the last moment.
Peter Pan arrive to save Wendy, her brothers and the rest of the lost boys. The final battle between Peter Pan and Captain Hook took place, appearing until Peter pushed Captain Hook from the boat, so he end in the jaws of the crocodile. After the great victory over the pirates, Peter Pan, and the lost boys become the masters of the island, enjoying the carefree life. Wendy and her brothers return back to their parents, who are waiting for them.
Time is very different for Peter, and he returns infrequently, until he shows up when Wendy is grown and married. Wendy tells the Neverland story to her daughter Jane. One spring when Peter Pan returns, he doesn’t realize that Wendy is a grown woman and he asks for Michael and John. Wendy tells Peter Pan that the child sleeping is a new one, and she tells him that she is a grown woman. Peter Pan is distraught because he didn’t want Wendy to grow up.
My lovely heroe of this story is Wendy – also the main character, alongside with Peter Pan. As an opposite to him, she is nice, noble and helpful to everyone facing the trouble. She is impersonating her mother the whole time, from whom she has taught a lot about life. She provided the lost boys mother-like care by feeding them, washing their clothes, cooking for them… She is aware of her beauty and acts aligned. When pirates imprisoned her, she kept her ladylike manners. She likes receiving compliments from men, and their courting as well.
