Exercise 5. Complete the text with the appropriate words:
1. Competition occurs - when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use an ecological resource in the same place at the same time. Give a few examples of resources: equally-spaced plants, which are all of the same age
2. Direct competition in nature (competition over exactly the same resource) often results in a winner and a loser. The loser fails to survive. Give the name of the principle which states that no two species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat at the same time: competitive exclusion
3. Predation - an interaction in which one organism captures and feeds on another organism. The organism that does the killing is the predator. The food organism is the prey.
4. Give the term for any relationship in which two species live closely together: a symbiotic relationship. There are three main classes of symbiotic relationships.
a) mutualism - a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit from the relationship. Example: relationship between fungi and algae.
b) commensalism - a symbiotic relationship in which one member of the association benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed. Example: the lichens and the tree.
