Literary stylistic analysis of a text

The aim of my report is to make an attempt of literary stylistic analysis of a text. The text belongs to the pen of the famous American writer Budd Schulberg who is well-known as screenwriter, television producer, novelist and sports writer. The writing refers to the Literary Artistic Method of Realism as it is marked with true to life situation. As for the genre it is presented as a short story. The creative work is called «A Short Digest of a Long Novel». The title directly corresponds with the theme. The theme of the text is preparing children for treachery, betrayal and broken promises at an early age. The narration is given from the personality of the father and presented in the form of the 3rd and is given from a limited omniscient point of view.

The composition is opened with an exposition which presents a description of the little girl by her father. The knot can be determined in the episode when the woman next door comes with her five year son Billy and asks to look after the boy. Unexpectedly, the knot develops to the story as the follows: the Billy offers the girl to jump off the table. When the development of the events comes to its tensest moment, the story achieves its climax – The little girl is up on the table and jumps, but Billy does not catch her. Finally, the climax is followed with an unexpected denouement: The reader learns that the girl got a valuable lesson, and then father tells her to be bravely.

The main character is the father. The father is round and static because he don’t changes through the text. The conflict which is revealed in the story can be determined as internal because it happens inside the father’s mind between his desire to protect daughter from betrayal and the realisation that it's not possible, and obvious as it is obviously presented. The composition is noticeable with its closed structure. To create the emotional atmosphere the author uses the following stylistic devices such as a metaphor.

The message of the literary work is parents need to teach their children how to cope with betrayal and treachery and explain to them how to react to it. The text is presented as a dialectic unity of the form and the context, which totally corresponds with the message the author implies and intends the reader get.

To sum up, I really enjoyed reading this short story, because l emphasised with the message of text.
